An Unfolded Place

January 2, 2008

This is a video of my new solo-in-progress “An Unfolded Place.” It’s from a showing at the Cunningham Studios on Dec. 16th.

What I know so far: I’ve created this goofy, cowgirl-esque character and I’m trying to set her loose in a kind of barren, wind-swept space. There is a sense of memory, or passage of time. As a performer it feels as though I have been dropped into a strange abandoned town and am left to try and shake hands with ghosts.

I’m not entirely done with the middle yet.

I definitely feel the narrative after reading your intro and seeing/hearing the work.A very emotive dance. Da

Well Skip to the Loo, and Shiver Me Timber,
Dorian put the “Limb” in Limber.
No zaftig shiksa could ever prance,
Like this “Brooklyn Dervish” of Modern Dance.
    A gamin-waif, minx, puckish pixie,
    And brother I ain’t just a-whistlin’ “Dixie”,
She moves with grace across the floor,
The spit ‘n immage of old Trepsichore–
the Muse I mean, of ancient lore.

Her dance in “An Unfolded Place”,
Takes me back in time and space,
    To Mogollon and Old Hatchita,
To Lake Valley, where a senorita,
Named Sadie Orchard drove the stage,
To Hillsboro, across the desert sage,
Of old New Mexico’s Southwest corner.
Why it would be an honor, I’ll be bless’t,
To entertain her as our guest,
And unfold for her Old Places West.

    Yore’s Respectfully,

    Santa Rita Slim
